Official Weigh In + Adjustment

Although it had only been 3 weeks since my last adjustment, my band didn't feel as tight as I'd like, so I went in today for a fill.  My PA is always very happy with my progress which makes me feel really great.

Today's "official" weight: 277 pounds
Total Loss: 67 pounds

She gave me a pretty agressive fill.  I started today with 5.2 cc's and ended up with 6.3 cc's total in a 10 cc band.  She was going to try for a bit tighter, but when she gave me more saline, I drank the Barium and she could see a little reflux on the fluoroscopy machine.

I told her that I'm trying to lose 15 pounds before my trip in March, so she agreed to make my appointment for only 3 weeks out again.  I asked her if she ever has patients whose bands are full (10 cc's) and they haven't finished losing weight.  She said it does happen, but pretty rare and that most patients top out between 5-7 cc's.  Now I'm afraid of needing more than 10 before I get to my goal!  I still have 78 pounds to lose to get to my 'first goal'...

So, for anyone who struggles with what to "eat" on the day of an adjustment, here's Today's Menu:

Breakfast: Horizon's Organic Chocolate Milk (150 cal, 8g protein)
Snack: Chobani Black Cherry Greek Yogurt (140 cal, 14g protein)
Lunch: Myoplex Lite EAS Shake (170 calories, 20 g protein)
Dinner: Campbell's Select Harvest Tomato Basil Soup (180 cal, 4 g protein)

Total Calories: 640 Calories
Total Protein: 46 g

  1. Hate to say this but I am at 9.4 in my 10 cc band and have a ways to go. My surgeon said that bands can be overfilled if we need to but I have good restriction at the moment so I'm trying to avoid that.

    1. How long ago did you have surgery? I really feel like I will get to 10...

    2. I had it October 2011, so my surgeon does fills every 2 months for the first year and then every 3 months after that. I didn't feel any restriction until around 7ccs and I was/am extrememly nervous about going over 10. The doctor told me to think of it like overfilling a tire a little but that he has done it and that there is no evidence that it is bad but that he wouldn't want to if he didn't have to. So, I'm hoping I can make a big dent at my current level.

  2. Considering how much weight you've lost in a short amount of time, and that you can average 800 calories a day, I'm surprised you need a fill. You seem to be doing really well. I just went from 6.2 to 5.9 because I felt too tight. Hate getting stuck!

    1. Staying as tight as I can keeps me on track. It would be VERY easy to eat over 800 calories and some days I do. Yesterday, I probably had 1400 calories :-/ I didn't count them because I had sushi for dinner.

    2. Ooh! I'm glad you brought that up. How have you managed sushi? I haven't had any in a restaurant since being banded, because I'm worried the pieces are too big. But I miss it so much!

    3. When I order, I ask them to make it with as little rice as possible. I stress to the waitress that if there was no rice, that would be perfectly fine with me. Wish I'd taken a picture for you. I'll remember to do that next time. It comes out pretty small. And I can only eat it when my band is pretty loose. I love sushi, so I always get it right before a fill!

  3. Do you get sock a lot? I am in the process of having the surgery, and I am worried about the sickness after eating. Does it happen all the time, and can you eat foods that aren't puréed? This terrifies me of vomiting all the time. You look great btw!

    1. Thanks Christina... Truthfully, I do get sick a couple times a week. However, this is not the band's fault, it is my fault. It usually happens when I get too hungry, then I eat too fast and don't chew enough, and up the food comes. It is different to throw up after surgery than before surgery though... the food comes up pretty much exactly like it went down...no stomach acid. I can eat almost anything other than bread/pasta.

    2. Okay. That makes me feel better. My father in law had gastric bypass, and he cannot eat pasta either. Thank you!

  4. Question. How long after you ave a fill do you have to stick to liquids? I had my first full yesterday and today I couldn't even finish my yogurt before I got super full. I tried soup at lunch but it was too much and I got sick. I'm concerned my band may be a little too tight... Anyway, your advice/experience would be awesome!

    1. Hi Harli.... I'm always fine after 24 hours. Are your fills under fluoroscopy? If not, it's very possible it's too tight, but only you and your doctor can determine that.

    2. Thanks for responding! I think I was eating too fast and not chewing enough, to be perfectly honest. Today has been absolutely fine. He doesn't do the fills under flouro. That's cool that yours does so you can figure out exacty where you need to be. Next time I go I may ask him why he doesn't. Anyway, thanks again and I will be eating slower and chewing more from now on!!!

    3. Unless there is a fluoroscopy machine in office, it's quite expensive. The difference is $1150 at the hospital vs. $50 copayment in office since they have one for me. I choose to drive 30 miles to the office with the machine.
